Jamie Gontarek Macy
Partner/Trial Attorney
Jamie is originally from Niceville, Florida. She went to Florida State University for her undergraduate degree. Having lots of family in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina, Jamie had a special fondness for New Orleans and decided to go to Loyola University for law school. While at Loyola, Jamie had the honor of being a member of law review, moot court, and interning for Justice Knoll of the Louisiana Supreme Court. Her most proud accomplishment of law school, however, is competitively boxing during final exams of her first semester of law school.
Jamie joined the Unglesby Law Firm and decided to make New Orleans her permanent home.
While at the Unglesby Law Firm she managed the mass tort litigation section, representing thousands of clients who were injured due to defective medical devices. Jamie was also part of the trial team at the Unglesby Law Firm and handled fact and expert witnesses during complex personal injury and wrongful death trials. She has been involved in multiple civil jury trials that have resulted in multi-million-dollar jury verdicts and settlements.
Below is a small selection of the case results Jamie was involved in, either the trial or appellate level:
· TBI case resulting in 19 million dollar verdict;
· Wrongful death case resulting in 10.3 million dollar verdict;
· Wrongful death case resulting in 8.2 million dollar verdict;
· TBI case resulting in 2 million verdict;
· Multi-level cervical fusion resulting in 1.2 million dollar settlement;
· Multi-level lumbar fusion resulting in 1.3 million dollar settlement;
· Employment discrimination resulting in 2.5 million dollar settlement;
· Non-surgical herniated disc injury resulting in $400,000 settlement
Based on her experience, Jamie was invited to become an adjunct faculty member of the Tulane Law School trial advocacy program and has been actively involved since 2021.
Jamie’s love for the law and trial began when she realized the skills required to be a good advocate:
“My grandpa was a lawyer, a clown in the FSU Circus, and a golden gloves boxer. I followed closely in his footsteps, as a lawyer, a clown in the FSU Circus, and a boxer. Although it seems like none of these strange extracurriculars have anything to do with each other, the strengths learned from each have helped in every tough situation in the courtroom.
It took guts to go out into the three rings hoping to make the crowd laugh. To persuade the audience to willfully suspend disbelief so I could communicate a story in four minutes. This taught me that words are just tools to create a story that is only as credible as the people trying to tell it. It took guts to get into the boxing ring, to stay on my feet and to connect punches. Boxing is an organized and controlled conflict resolution sport; much like the legal system. Where preparation and training is everything. And it takes guts to stand in front of a jury or judge hoping to prove your case.
All involve strategy, competence, and having a really good attitude. Having someone listen to you, prepare, strategize, and tell your story in a compelling way is the foundation of good legal work, and it is what I do for all of my clients.”
